Using the tune Evening (T.B. 201), written by Bramwell Coles, the composer creates a set of variations in which the melody features either in part or as a whole. In the original song ‘Evening’ the words refer to 1 Samuel, Chapter 3, where Samuel, a young boy serving in the temple under Eli, hears God’s voice calling him during the night. Initially, Samuel doesn’t recognise the voice, thinking it’s Eli. But after Eli instructs him to respond ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening’, Samuel listens to God’s message.
